An Open Letter To My Sister: I Love You

letter to my sister

To my savior, my rock, my best friend.

I don’t say it enough, but I love you. I love you a lot. I don’t know how I got so lucky to have you as my older sister, but I wouldn’t trade you for the universe.

Thank you for being such an inspiration to me, to being so strong and so loving. Thank you for listening to me when I’m sad and crying and just need to vent. Thank you for giving me advice when I’m stressed and unsure what to do. Thank you for helping me when I’ve fallen down.

You are incredibly amazing. I think you deserve the world, yet sometimes I can tell you don’t see what I see. I want you to know that you do.

When I was sad, you took care of me, cheered with me when I was happy, and comforted me when I was scared.

You taught me what a soulmate really is, the person who comes into people’s lives with a purpose and change them.

You light up every room you walk into and lift up others when they need it. You hold others when they cry, make them laugh when they don’t want to, and comfort those who need it.

You are an electric light in my life, the person I need when I’m down. You helped me with my mental illness, just as I’m helping you with yours.

I miss you.

You went away to a place that makes you better, and the house is empty without you. I can hear the floorboard creek, the wind howl at night, and the soft echo of the tv.

I wish you were here to come into my room and bring me food, to sit with me and talk to gossip till the night is old, and to laugh until my cheeks hurt.

You’re not only what everyone else needs, but you’re also all that I need. You are so much stronger than you have even begun to realize. Honest and caring, funny and smart, strong and compassionate, beautiful and fucking powerful.

I’ll always be there for you, no matter what happens. When the days get cold and the nights get lonely, my bed will be warm and ready for you to come chat.

When you’re feeling upset, I am your ear.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, I am your helping hand.

When you’re feeling happy, I am happy with you.

You taught me so many things I can never repay you for; you taught me how to do makeup, how to do my hair, you tweezed my eyebrows and combed my hair, you warned me about harmful products. But most of all, you guided me through this rollercoaster of life.

You are bright and shining like the North star, and I wish you could see yourself in the light that I see you.

I love you more than you could ever know.
