Full Moon Meditation: Illuminate, Expand & Celebrate

Listening to a full moon meditation is a wonderful way to harness the energy of the expansive moon during this time. We’ve included one to get you started in this post.

The light of the sun shines on the moon, creating a beautiful sphere of light which is reflected down onto earth. And because the moon represents the collective feminine, this is a powerful time for women in the 29 day cycle.

Women come together in moon circles to harness this energy, embody the divine feminine within, and to feel in flow with their own sacred cycle.

The full moon is a time of completion, celebration and illumination. Emotions run high, shadows come into light, and creative energy peaks.

Here’s what the main four phases of the moon cycle look like:

  • New moon
  • Waxing moon
  • Full moon
  • Waning moon

Each phase represents a different archetype, and a different phase of our menstrual cycle. And each phase brings its own unique energy and power, which we can embody and flow with.

How to create a full moon ritual

Step 1 – Gather your tools.

Candles, crystals, essential oils, incense, a diffuser, oracle/tarot card deck, notebook & pen, some journal inquiries, music or a guided meditation ready to go, a plant or some fresh flowers in a vase, a yoga mat/comfy cushion, and maybe a pretty scarf or piece of fabric (to create the base of your altar).

Step 2 – Create a Sacred Space.

Setup indoors or outdoors. Cleanse the energy with some sage or palo santo, and light a candle. Place your chosen items around you, or on an altar. You can find out how to create a sacred altar by clicking here.

Put some peaceful music on if you feel called to. Spotify have some ready-made full moon playlists, or you could create your own.

Step 3 – Become Present.

Next, get grounded and find the present moment. Bringing awareness to your breath and closing your eyes can help you find stillness. If you feel any tension or discomfort in your body, see if you can let it go through breathing.

Step 4 – Meditate.

You can meditate in silence, to some background music, or choose to listen to a special full moon guided meditation. I tend to mix things up depending on how I feel. Sometimes you’ll want to be guided, other times you’ll want more quiet for your own thoughts.

Step 5 – Gratitude.

The full moon is a wonderful time to give thanks for everything you have in your life today. Make a list or say them out loud. Let your appreciation envelope you. When we focus on the good, we attract more of it.

Step 6 – Journal.

Journal on anything that’s coming up for you, or anything that arose during your meditation. It can help to use a set of journal inquiries or prompts to get you started.

Here are some to get your thoughts flowing:

  • What are you being called to let go of?
  • What needs to be illuminated?

Step 7 – Affirmations.

The full moon is a great time to create an empowering or healing affirmation that aligns with the vibration you wish to call in.

I love to begin my affirmations with “I,” and write them as though they are already in motion.

Step 8 – Close your ritual.

There’s no right or wrong way to close your full moon ritual, just make sure it feels complete.

Ring a bell, meditate again, say a short prayer, sing, chant, dance, or do some moon salutations.

Once you’ve closed your ceremony, be sure to replenish and drink plenty of water.

The power of listening to a guided meditation on full moon

The full moon is a powerful time for self-reflection and inner discovery. It’s a chance for you to meet all those shadows within the depths of your being, work through them, and rise.

I love listening to a guided meditation during my full moon rituals. It allows me to lie down, slow my mind, and just be open to the words I’m hearing and the journey I’m being taken on. And it helps me tune in to the specific energy of the full moon.

Different meditations will have a different effect on you. Some won’t speak to you, while others will make you feel like you’re coming home. Experiment listening to different ones until you find one that works for you. And always be open to something new coming your way.

The best time to have a full moon ritual and listen to a full moon meditation is on the day (or night preferably) of the full moon, and in the 3 day window that follows. This is because the energy is most potent during this time.

Here’s an exclusive preview of our guided full moon meditation

Find a comfortable seat, sitting up in a chair, on a cushion, or lying down.

Settle into stillness, and bring awareness to your breath.

Taking a deep breath in. And a deep breath out.

Another deep breath in, breathing up from the belly, into your chest, and throat. Then sighing it out.

And one final deep breath in, and squeeze all of the muscles in your body tightly, tensing everything up. And as you let your breath go, along with your body, feel all the stress or tension you’ve been holding onto melt away. Let it all go.

Now falling into the natural rhythm of your breath. Without forcing anything.

You walk into a dark room, lit only with a few candles, and filled with a circle of powerful women. It feels warm, inviting, and magical in here. Each woman is laying down on a soft, pink cushion on the floor. There’s a space in front of, so you go and join the sacred circle.

You are coming home. To your soul sisters, your true self, and to Her and her divine feminine gifts.

You get comfortable, close your eyes, and rest your hands by your side, palms facing up.

Above you, at the centre of the circle, is a beautiful, big ball of white light. It radiates down onto your skin, illuminating each and every woman in the circle. Every woman is a divine Goddess.

As the light shines down on you, it begins to pour into your body, and fill you up. Your feet, arms, and legs. Your belly, your heart, and your shoulders.

Now, your entire body is nothing but pure, white light.

You can finally see into the crevices and corners that were once filled with darkness.

What can you see there? What can you feel? And what is rising within you?

What is buried deep within your shadows?

Take a deep breath in, and gently sigh it out.

Let yourself be with whatever is stirring up within you. Give yourself permission to feel all your feelings, without judgement.

Try creating your own full moon meditation

It has never been easier to create your own guided meditation.

Step 1 – Write out what you want to include in your meditation. Think about what you need to hear most, or what would help you go on a journey within.

Step 2 – Use a recording app on your phone, a microphone, or even an SLR camera to record your audio. Don’t worry if you make a mistake, just keep going and you can edit it out later.

Step 3 – Use a free software like Audacity to edit your track. Mix in a piece of background music that you like, and evokes the energy of your meditation.

And that’s it!
